Seventy-five years is a long time to be around. For some people, the thought of turning 75 years old conjures up images of hip replacements, hearing aids and memory loss.
For The Walker Company, turning 75 years old is cause for celebration. This year marks the company's 75th anniversary, and the Walker Family and staff happily greet this milestone with open arms and a proud history.
This proud history began in 1933 when Arthur E. "Easy" Walker partnered with his father and brother to open White Rock Mountain Quarry that produces crushed limestone products. With time comes change, and for A.W. Walker & Son, change meant growth.
In 1959, Walker Construction Company was formed by A.E. Walker, Roy Thomas Lowry and Alma Hollearn. Arthur Walker, Jr. was elected Vice-President of Walker Construction Company in 1975, and after Arthur Everett "Easy" Walker passed in 1981, Arthur Walker, Jr. was elected President of the corporation. In 1995, the company's name was changed to The Walker Company.
Over the last seven decades, services have evolved throughout Central and Eastern Kentucky to include material production, earthwork construction and commercial building construction. The scope of services is vast, including highway and bridge construction, new building construction, golf courses and landfill construction. Through four generations of Walkers, one White Rock Mountain Quarry has grown into the ownership and operation of five quarries, two asphalt plants and one ready-mix asphalt concrete plant.
The Walker Company continues to be a family-owned and operated company with a mission to "provide the customer with a product of the highest quality in the timeliest manner employing local people while maintaining corporate integrity and profitability." Over the years, the company and its employees have made it their personal mission to give back to those communities and customers they serve, with events such as Dozer Days, Bowl for Kids Sake and Relay for Life.
Seventy-five years is a long time, but good things come along with age. Those years have brought on substantial change and growth for The Walker Company. The years have also given the company one of the finer things that comes along with age—proven experience. As the company's motto states, "Things change; quality stays the same." The Walker Company has provided seventy-five years of dedicated quality service to central and eastern Kentucky, and doesn't plan on "winding down" any time soon.
